The Bane of My Existance

I work at a large university. The nature of my position is such that I have to be rehired, or "appointed" periodically, typically on a semesterly basis. Things such as my health insurance coverage, paycheck, you know, the minor details of life, hinge upon an admin remembering to press some button in the "system" at the beginning of each semester. I've been at this institution for 5.5 years now. I am about 50/50 on whether my appointment goes through correctly each semester. I have no freakin clue what is going on this time, but when I contacted HR to figure out my maternity leave plan, HR said it looks like I'm not currently appointed. I cannot describe how incredibly angry and frustrated it makes me to deal with this just about EVERY semester, sometimes MULTIPLE times per semester. I think it is the lack of control and information. I can't see the admin's "system" so I just have to take their word that everything is correct/incorrect, as the case may be, and when I have 2 people telling me different things, as is often the case, it DRIVES ME INSANE!
And to top it off, the info HR has told me thus far indicates I'm going to have to figure out how to squeeze maternity leave and 2 up to 2 week surgery recovery periods into 12 weeks of FLMA. Assuming they can locate my appointment. Apparently I'm not currently employed (luckily I am still getting a paycheck, so at least that part is working correctly).
